A Dozen Benefits of Independent Bookkeeping

July 19, 20244 min read

Are you a bookkeeper and considering quitting your day job and going independent with your bookkeeping skills?

Hey friends! Lynn here and I want to chat about why going solo as a remote bookkeeper could be an awesome move for you. I get it - stepping out on your own can seem intimidating! But with the right mindset and support crew, it opens up a whole world of freedom and flexibility.

Through my own journey building a bookkeeping biz, I’ve discovered at least a dozen perks that get me jumping out of bed each morning excited to work. Maybe some will resonate with you too!

  1. Flexibility - Hands down, this takes the cake! You get to be your own boss and set your own hours. You will have greater control over your work-life balance and have more freedom to manage your personal commitments.

  2. You can work from anywhere! - Like to travel?  All you need is your laptop, solid wi-fi and you are in business for the day. Whether sipping your morning brew on the back patio or working from a cozy café during your travels, remote work means getting paid no matter the view behind you. I have traveled all over the world while managing my bookkeeping business.

  3. Greater autonomy –  Since bookkeeping tends to be an independent endeavor anyways, going solo amplifies that. There are few bookkeeping “emergencies” to get your schedule out of whack.

  4. Increased productivity - Multiple studies have shown that remote bookkeepers tend to be more productive compared to their office-based counterparts.  When my company transitioned fully online, productivity rose by 15% almost instantly! Fewer distractions in your personal workspace can really help you find your groove.

  5. Saving money and time - No more wasting gas and time commuting or splurging on office attire. Plus, you likely already own the key equipment like a computer and ergonomic chair needed to serve clients successfully from home.

  6. Low investment to get started – You probably have most of the things you need to get started such as a computer, fast internet, Gmail, good lighting, and perhaps a comfortable office chair. I recommend 2 large monitors for increased productivity.  ( mine are 27 inches!)

  7. Virtual bookkeeping pays well - With little to no overhead, everything you make can go straight to your bank account. Sign up for QBO accountant version which is free to manage your books. We can help you with pricing and understanding the value of your talents.

  8. You can learn on your own - Virtual bookkeeping is easy to learn. Take advantage of Intuit’s  Pro Advisors Program where they offer free training. Our community of bookkeepers helps train each other as well. We offer formal training and links to great free training. We offer group training and access to an incredible peer network.

  9. Expanded job opportunities - Remote work removes geographic barriers and opens opportunities to work for companies located anywhere in the world! How exciting is this?  It immediately expands your pool of potential opportunities that may have restricted you in the past.

  10. Lucrative income potential - Rates for outsourced financial services continue rising to meet demand, especially with virtual access widening your client base! We will help you with pricing by pricing your talents fairly and supporting you if you need assistance with complex bookkeeping.

  11. Environmental benefits - With fewer people traveling to and from work, there is less reliance on cars and public transportation, resulting in a smaller carbon footprint. Every bit counts when scaling sustainable choices!

  12. Professional development –You still need to keep your bookkeeping skills up-to-date but you will have more time to devote to personal improvement by embracing continuous learning.    Having a bookkeeping coach, weekly training, and a bookkeeping support group (whom you can call or message any time of the day) will ease your mind and give you the professional development you need when you need it.

Well, there’s a teaser for why I’m such a remote work convert! What most excites you about ditching the office grind for the solopreneur life? I’d love to hear your take!
